Patients will usually see an internal medicine doctor for things such as heart disease, Chronic Lung Disease, Obesity, Hypertension and Diabetes.

Internist doctors may also consult with doctors in other fields of medicine, or may also be called to consult on a patient by another specialist.

The main difference between Family Medicine and Internal Medicine is that IM training focuses on adults, with residents spending time between various adult medicine sub specialties.
