You can recover pretty quick sometimes from amnesia but if you have anterograde amnesia then you can never regain any memories since the memories weren't encoded properly into your brain.
However most other forms of amnesia people usually regain there memory eventually and sometimes it can take month or two and sometimes it can take a year or more to regain lost memory after amnesia.
A psychotherapist can work with an amnesia patient and help them recover the lost memory.
