The right lung is bigger than the left lung because it's not near the heart and has more space.

The left lung is near the heart and shares the space with the heart so it needs to be a bit smaller but they function both the same.

The right lung also contains another triangular subdivision known as the middle lobe which also requires it to be a bit larger than the left lung.
