Wood burning fireplaces can sometimes make a house smell due to downdrafts in the chimney when the fireplace is not burning.
If you can stop that downdraft from blowing down the creosote into your house then you can stop the smell of the wood burning fireplace.
Make sure you have the fireplace chimney cleaned out every year or two depending on how often you use the wood burning fireplace which will keep the creosote from getting into your house due to downdrafts.
