If you have thin tissue or sensitive gums then you're more prone to having your gums recede but for most people gum recession should not occur when doing normal teeth whitening.

The harsh chemicals used in teeth whitening products burn the gum tissue when your gums are more sensitive which causes gums to recede.

Usually though you shouldn't have a problem with your gums or any other part of your mouth when teeth whitening and it's pretty safe.
