The kid from Christmas Story did not really get his tongue stuck to the pole but instead to simulate the look of him getting his tongue stuck to the pole they had a hole cut into the pole and used a suction cup to make it look like his tongue was actually stuck to the pole when in reality it wasn't.
They had the film taken at a certain angle so that you could not see or notice the suction cup or hole that was cut into the pole.
Tongues can really get stuck to poles in the winter though so don't do it and if you do you need to pour some cold water on it or call the fire department to get your tongue removed from the pole.
