To make homemade gravy you use a 2:2:1 ratio of equal parts of fat and flour, then whisk the equal parts of fat and flour together to make a roux.
Then you add your choice of liquid, which takes around 10 minutes from start to finish to make homemade gravy.
The ingredients for homemade gravy include.
4 tablespoons of fat, such as butter, turkey drippings or even bacon grease.
4 tablespoons of all purpose flour.
2 cups of warm broth, like vegetable broth, chicken broth or beef broth.
And optional you can add 1/2 tsp of onion powder or garlic powder and then add salt and black pepper to taste.
To make the homemade gravy, in a saucepan, melt the fat like your butter over medium heat or heat the pan drippings.
Then make the roux, by slowly whisking in the flour and continue whisking constantly for 3 to 4 minutes until the paste turns a light golden brown color and the raw flour smell cooks out.
Then add the liquid, by slowly pouring in the warm broth, whisking vigorously as you pour the warm broth to prevent any lumps from forming.
Next, bring the mixture to a gentle boil and reduce the heat to a simmer.
Allow it to cook for 3 to 5 minutes, stirring frequently, until it becomes thick enough to coat the back of a spoon.
And finally, remove it from the heat and stir in salt, pepper and herbs to your taste.
To make homemade brown gravy, you start by creating a roux with some flour and butter and then cook the roux of flour and butter until it's brown.
Next you whisk in some beef broth into the brown roux of flour and butter and then simmer it until it's thickened.
To enhance and improve the flavor of the homemade brown gravy, you can use some bouillon, Worcestershire sauce or meat drippings in the brown gravy.
Brown gravy is often also thickened up using a cornstarch water slurry to get a glossy finish of the homemade brown gravy.
To create the roux for the homemade brown gravy, simply melt 3 tbsp of butter or pan drippings in a saucepan over medium heat and then whisk in 3 tbsp of some all purpose flour.

After that is done, you add in some seasonings like 1 tsp of garlic powder, onion powder and 1 tsp of Worcestershire sauce if you desire, although you can skip these seasonings if you just want a plain brown gravy or don't have these ingredients.
Although these seasonings make the homemade brown gravy taste much better.
After adding the seasonings to the homemade brown gravy, simmer the homemade brown gravy until it thickens to your desired thickness, which takes around 2 minutes to 3 minutes.
And if necessary, you can thicken your homemade brown gravy more, with a slurry of 1 tbsp of cornstarch that is mixed with 2 tbsp of cold water.
