When you shop for homeowners insurance and get quotes online or through a homeowners insurance company offline the insurance company will pull your credit rating and credit score based on the information you gave them.

The credit check though that the insurance company does for both car insurance and homeowners insurance is known as a soft inquiry and unlike a hard inquiry that credit cards and loans do a soft inquiry does not affect or lower your credit score.

So while you may notice a soft inquiry on your credit report after shopping for homeowners insurance the soft inquiry will not hurt or lower your credit score.
