If someone can't pay for life saving surgery what happens to the person?

If someones goes to the hospital and needs life saving surgery and can't pay for it will the surgeon still operate on the person to save their life?

I'm sure the the surgery would still be performed as I believe that hospitals are required to treat patients even if they can't get the money right away.

I remember reading somewhere where a surgeon actually paid for surgery himself for the patients and then he died of a heart attack in his 50s.
