Actually there are both moon cutouts and star cutouts on outhouses at least there was in colonial times.
The moon cutout meant that the outhouse was a ladies outhouse while the star cutout symbol on the outhouse was a meaning for a mans outhouse.
The moon and the star was used to distinguish between a mans and ladies outhouse.
