The part of the human brain that controls our bowel movements is the brain's cerebral cortex, most specifically the superior frontal gyrus and anterior cingulate gyrus which enables conscious awareness of our need to poop and voluntary control.

Our human bowel movements are also controlled by a complex interaction between our brain and our gut, and is mainly managed by the ENS or Enteric Nervous System which is a second brain in our gut, and moderated by our autonomic nervous system.

In us humans, our ENS or Enteric Nervous System which is often called the second brain, operates within the walls of our gastrointestinal tract and manages peristalsis (movement) autonomously.

The vagus nerve and spinal nerves also act as the main communication lines and allows our central nervous system to influence digestion, most particularly during stress.

Also the parasympathetic nervous system via the sacral nerves promotes pooping or defecation, and the sympathetic system is what inhibits it.

And the anal sphincter is also controlled voluntarily, which allows for delaying of pooping or defecation.

The key nerve pathways for controlling our bowel movements include.

The sacral nerves, which controls the rectum and external anal sphincter.

And the pudendal nerve, which manages voluntary bowel control.

Also our cerebral cortex is what determines whether or not to initiate or delay pooping or defection, which is also supported by the signals from our sacral nerves and our enteric nervous system, especially when it's stimulated by rectal filling.

On average, a healthy adult can hold up to one pound of poop in their colon.

However, it is also important to note that holding onto the poop for prolonged periods can lead to constipation and other digestive problems.
