A person on social security can get a free phone and free cell phone service if they meet the qualifications.

As long as the person on social security meets the federal eligibility criteria, they can get a free cellphone and free cellphone service, through programs like lifewireless.

Qualifying for free cellphone's and free cellphone service also is based on your income and/or if you also get other Government assistance like SNAP, or Food Stamps, Medicaid or Supplemental Security income.

Medicare itself does not give you a free phone, although other programs that are often liked to senior benefits can help you get the free phone.

Even just being on social security, does not automatically qualify you for a free cellphone and free cellphone service, but it can help you qualify.

If you can't afford cellphone service and need a phone, you can also use VOIP calling apps on WiFi service like Textnow, but you need to have WiFi to connect to.

You can use free WiFi, from places like Walmart, libraries, McDonald's and other restaurants and locations.

TextNow is currently the best alternative to Lifeline and other free government phones.

To qualify for a free government phone your household income should be at or below 135% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines and or you must participate in one of the below programs.

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)
Medicaid.
Federal Public Housing Assistance.
Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
Veterans Pension Benefits.
