Dogs really don't respond to their names in reality since they really don't understand our talking but mostly the dog responds to your voice when you call them.
So if your dogs name is Rover for example you could likely call out Jasper or some other name in the direction of the dog and the dog would likely come to you anyway.
As long as the dog continues to recognize you and your voice they should should remember the sound of your voice and come to you.
