The Faber test is a physical examination maneuver that is used by doctors to detect pathologies in your hip, lumbar spine or your sacroiliac joint.

The Faber test is also known as the Patrick's test and involves positioning a supine patient's leg in Flexion, ABduction d External Rotation, which forms a figure 4 position and also applying downward pressure to your knee, with pain indicating that you have a positive test result and no pain indicating a negative test result.

The purpose of the Faber test is to identify issues like hip impingement or FAI, sacroiliac joint dysfunction or labral ears, or psoas spasm.

To perform the Faber test, you lay on your back or supine and place your ankle of your affected leg over the opposite knee.

The examiner then stabilizes the opposite hip and then applies some downward pressure to your bent knee.

If you experience pain in your sacroiliac area, buttock or groin during the FABER test then it's a positive result.

The Faber test is commonly also called figure 4 test because your legs form a 4 shape during the Faber test.

The Faber test is also an orthopedic tool that is standard for diagnosing of lower back, buttock or groin pain.

The FABER test, also known as Patrick's test, is basically a pain provocation test to aid in diagnosing hip joint pathology originating from the connective tissues.

The Faber test is also used to identify a sacroiliac joint (SIJ) pathology.
