To become a court reporter you need to have a college degree in court reporting and/or stenography and be able to type between 180 to 225 words per minute to pass the test and be hired as a court reporter.

You also need your high school diploma or a GED to enroll in the classes to become a court reporter.

It doesn't take all that long to get the college degree in court reporting though and unlike some other careers it takes only around 18 to 24 months max to become a court reporter.
