What you will need to bring to the DMV to register your car in Arkansas is a title or bill of sale, may need a federal odometer statement, proof of Arkansas auto insurance and of course the payment and your driver's license or ID.

If you haven't yet had the vehicle assessed, then you will need to take the title to the county assessor and have the vehicle assessed and pay any personal property taxes, if you owe them before you can register the vehicle.

If you don't owe personal property taxes yet then you can register the vehicle without needing to pay the personal property taxes until they become due, which is the next year.

The title or bill of sale, proves ownership of the vehicle.

The documents that you need to assess your car in Arkansas are your vehicle's title or bill of sale, a federal odometer statement, proof of Arkansas auto insurance and your current year county tax assessment.

If you haven't had the car assessed yet, then you don't need your current county tax assessment as you wouldn't have one.

You also need a valid driver's license and proof of address to assess your vehicle in Arkansas.

The federal odometer statement that you may need is often part of the vehicle's title or bill of sale for newer vehicles and has to be completed accurately.

When I went to assess my truck in Arkansas, I only needed to show my title and driver's license to get it assessed before I could get it registered in Arkansas.

Although the assessors office where you're at may vary on the documents they need.

If you owe any personal property taxes in Arkansas you cannot get your vehicle registered or renewed in Arkansas until all the personal property taxes are paid in full.

To avoid vehicle sales tax in Arkansas, the total consideration for the sale of the new or used motor vehicle has to be less than $4,000.00.

If the total consideration for the sale of the new or used motor vehicle in Arkansas is less than $4,000.00 then no sales tax is due on the vehicle.

You will, still have to pay personal property taxes on the vehicle after your register your vehicle in Arkansas.

But the personal property taxes on the vehicle will not be due until the following year and the actual personal property tax amount for the vehicle will depend on the assessed value.

Before registering your vehicle in Arkansas you have to take the title to the assessors office and have the vehicle assessed.

Then if no personal property taxes are owed, you can register the vehicle at the DMV office.

As for sales tax and local tax on a vehicle, an example would be a $20,000.00 vehicle.

In Arkansas if you have a $20,000.00 vehicle that you bought, you would pay around $625.00 in county tax as well as the state sales tax which would be around $1,300.00, although it can be as high as $1,700.00 to $1,900.00.

And so your total taxes including local tax and sales tax on the $20,000.00 vehicle in Arkansas would be around $1,925.00.
