An engine shutdown device  is a safety mechanism on vehicles or machinery that cuts off fuel and or air to the engine automatically, which stops the engine quickly during emergencies like fires or when the engine is over speeding.

An engine shutdown device can also be part of a fuel saving system in a vehicle like start and stop technology.

When used in critical applications, like marine and industrial and heavy vehicles, the engine shutdown device also integrates with fire suppression and prevents fire fuel/re-ignition.

For consumer vehicles, the engine shutdown device is commonly the auto start/stop which turns off the engine at lights when you stop to save fuel and then the engine restarts when you're ready to move again.

Emergency shutdown systems or ESS systems protect equipment and people from catastrophic failure, such as fire or a runaway diesel engine.

It often uses sensors, such as fire detectors or rollover sensors to trigger a valve or plate which blocks the air intake or fuel line.

These types of systems are commonly used on marine engines, tankers, industrial generators and heavy machinery.

When integrated with a fire suppression system, a fire extinguisher discharges and the engine shuts down and the fans also shut down, which starve the fire and prevent re-ignition.

The way it works is, it links with the fire suppression control module to cut engine power and ventilation and it's most often used in marine vessels, off road vehicles, mining equipment and some other heavy equipment.

For the start/stop systems on vehicles, it improves fuel economy by turning off the vehicle engine when the vehicle is stopped, like at a red light.

It uses a heavy duty starter or an integrated starter generator to quickly restart the engine when the brake is released or the clutch is pressed.

These systems are used in modern conventional and hybrid passengers cars and there is most often a manual override button for emergencies or specific situations.
