The main functions of an investment bank are underwriting of new stock issues, taking the responsibility of mergers and acquisitions and in general acting as a financial adviser to a number of high profile, private firms as well as the governmental firms.

Investment banks also mainly specialize in large and complex financial transactions unlike regular non investment banks.
