All States will require you to have proof of insurance and have insurance on that vehicle before you're allowed to proceed with the registration.

If you have no insurance on the vehicle then the DMV will refuse to register your car or even title it in your name.

The first thing you need to do is get the auto insurance and then bring proof of auto insurance with you to the DMV or other location where you register your vehicle and then as long as you have the proper paperwork then you'll be able to register your vehicle.

The DMV will always require you to show proof of car insurance when you go to register your vehicle an even when you renew your registration in person or online you'll need to have car insurance or you won't be able to renew your vehicle registration or register your vehicle for the first time.

Also some places that have personal property taxes won't allow you to register or renew your vehicles license plates if you owe back personal property taxes.
