2 year olds do remember trauma that they experience.

Although a 2 year olds memories of the trauma is not always the same as older children's and adults memories of trauma.

2 year olds don't have a fully developed explicit memory, or conscious recall, although their implicit memory, or sensory and emotional responses can also be impacted significantly.

2 year olds and young children mainly rely on their implicit memory when it comes to remembering things, which is not related to the sensory experiences, bodily sensations and emotions.

The 2 year old may not have a clear narrative of the trauma or event that occurred, but they can remember the feelings and any physical sensations that is associated with the trauma.

Also trauma and even in early childhood, can also disrupt the brain development, and most particularly in areas that are related to memory, emotional regulation and their social emotional development.

Instead of the explicit recall, toddlers and 2 year olds may show signs of trauma through changes in their behavior, like increased clinginess, new fears, changes in play and sleep disturbances.

Trauma that is experienced in early childhood can also have lasting effects and potentially impact relationships, emotional regulation and the child's mental health later in life.

Although a 2 year old may not recall a traumatic event or trauma in the same way as adults or with clear details, the trauma can still leave a lasting impact on the 2 year old's emotional and developmental trajectory.
