Is it worth renting a car if you have a lot to do in NYC?

I come to New York for only a couple of days, but I have a week's worth of things to do: meetings, trips to different neighborhoods, and a little free time I want to leave for the city. I'm wondering if renting a car will help me manage everything, or if it's better not to take any risks with traffic. Who has experienced this - what turned out to be more convenient in the end?

When I started planning a busy trip to New York, it became clear that cabs and subways alone would not get me far - there are too many points to cover in a short time. In the process, I came across an article describing how renting a car really helps you get more done in three days. It's all about parking and routes.
