Irlen Syndrome is also known as mears syndrome or Meare's Irlen syndrome and is a visual processing disorder which affects how your brain interprets visual information and most particularly from printed text.

Mears syndrome is also known as visual stress.

Mears syndrome causes difficulties with reading, including eye strain, headaches and visual distortion, which can also be alleviated with colored filters or even overlays.

Meares-Irlen Syndrome is basically a Visual Processing Disorder where people experience visual stress due to a problem with the perceptual part of the brain.

Some people with mears syndrome or Mears Irlen syndrome report that the words they are trying to read appear to move, wobble or flicker while others say that the page appears too bright or the words are too close together.

This condition is sometimes known as Meares-Irlen syndrome.

Those affected by the condition may skip words or lines when reading.

Treatment for mears syndrome or Meares Irlen syndrome involves the use of color and simple eye exercises.

Colored overlays and glasses have also been shown to lessen the effects of visual stress. Likewise, regular simple exercises to train the eye and increase coordination have had some success as well.

Symptoms of Meares-Irlen Syndrome can also mimic ADHD and misdiagnosis is common.

And it's also possible to have both ADHD and Irlen Syndrome and it's appropriate to treat both conditions as separate.
