Just one vacuum leak on the engine can cause all sorts of engine trouble and yes the vacuum leak could be a cause of a check engine light.

I would first hook up a computer to the vehicles computer and test to see what the check engine light may be on for because it could be a loose gas cap, faulty gas cap, bad spark plugs, bad ignition coil etc.

But if you do have a vacuum leak it should be fixed anyway because it can cause major problems with the engine overtime.

A vacuum leak on an engine can cause serious engine damage because it can alter air to fuel mixture ratio and cause the engine to run too lean or too rich which can cause engine misfires as well as increase your fuel consumption.
