You can properly clean your nose by using a suction device for your nose and a nasal wash such as a Neti Pot or other saline solution to irrigate the nose with.

To clean your nose without picking it you can use a saline nasal wash which is a good and sanitary way to clean our nose and nasal passages as well as your sinus cavities

The reason you shouldn't pick your nose is because it can spread germs when you don't wash your hands and you could also tear tiny blood vessels inside the nose which can lead to a nosebleed.

Adults still pick their nose to remove boogers that can be irritating or uncomfortable.

Nose picking in adults can also be from compulsive behavior.

Healthy boogers are usually clear in color although they may be slightly yellow but should not be overly yellow as a yellow or green color in boogers can be a sign of infection.

Black boogers usually mean that you have dried blood or have inhaled something dark such as dust, smog, cigarette smoke etc.

In some cases black boogers can also mean a fungal infection which tend to affect people with a compromised immune system.

Bloody boogers can mean you have broken a tiny blood vessel in your nostrils or you have irritation of the nasal tissues or a sinus infection.

Most times the bloody boogers will go away on their own without any issues and are nothing to worry about.

The signs that your phlegm or mucus are serious is if it comes up as a yellowish-green color or there is blood in the phlegm or mucus.

If you cough up thick, greenish-yellow phlegm then or are wheezing or have a fever you should see a doctor.
