In most cases you do not need a CDL to operate a SEMI that is privately owned either by yourself or by a family member.
However you're usually only allowed to operate the private SEMI within your own state and if you plan to or need to drive the SEMI across state lines then you'll need a CDL license to be legal in operating the SEMI.
