The squeeze test for DVT also known as deep vein thrombosis is part of the Homan's sign test and is a physical exam.

The squeeze test for DVT is done by squeezing the calf muscle while also dorsiflexing your foot.

To do the squeeze test for DVT also known as the Homan's sign test lay on your back, then extend the knee in the leg you want to check, then have someone raise your leg to 10 degrees.

Next have them squeeze your calf while you flex your foot.

If the squeeze test for DVT is positive there will be calf pain or tenderness when your foot is dorsiflexed.

However the test is not very specific or sensitive and also has a high rate of false positives.

Other signs of deep vein thrombosis or DVT include swelling, redness or tenderness in the area, leg cramps or leg pain that gets worse when bending your foot and skin discoloration.

DVT also known as deep vein thrombosis is a medical condition in which a blood clot forms in a deep vein and often in your lower legs.

The symptoms of deep vein thrombosis include.

Heaviness or achiness in your leg.

Enlarged veins.

Warmth to the touch legs.

Pain and swelling and redness in the leg that is affected.

However some people who have deep vein thrombosis have no symptoms.

Causes of deep vein thrombosis includes.

Surgery or trauma.

Obesity.

Pregnancy.

Prolonged inactivity like long flights, sitting too long, bed rest etc.

Blood clotting disorders and certain medications like hormone replacement therapy and birth control pills.

Treatment for deep vein thrombosis includes compression stockings, blood thinners, elevating the effected leg and in severe cases surgery to remove the clot.

Complications of deep vein thrombosis include pulmonary embolism which is when a blood clot travels to your lungs and post thrombotic syndrome which is long term damage to your veins.

To prevent deep vein thrombosis you should get up and move around often and avoid sitting or remaining inactive for long periods.

Wear compression stockings.

If you do experience any symptoms of deep vein thrombosis you should seek medical attention immediately as early diagnoses and treatment of deep vein thrombosis is critical for preventing complications from deep vein thrombosis.
