The national bird of Manipur is the Mrs. Hume's Pheasant.
The Mrs. Hume's pheasant is also known as Nongin.
The Mrs. Hume's pheasant is a large forest pheasant that has a greyish brown colored head, bare red facial skin, chestnut brown plumage, yellowish bill, brownish orange iris, white wingbars and metallic blue neck feathers.
Mrs. Hume's pheasants exhibit strong sexual dimorphism, the male are highly colorful whereas the female are of dull color.
The Mrs. Hume's pheasant earned its name 'Nong-in' because of its ability of knowing changes in weather conditions or cycle of cloud in the sky (Nong- meaning rain, in - meaning to follow: one knowing the rain/weather cycle).
Pheasants are large, long-tailed game birds.
The male pheasants have rich chestnut, golden-brown and black markings on their bodies and tails, with a dark green head and red face wattling.
Female pheasants are mottled with paler brown and black.
