Using a Kennel to crate train a dog can seem cruel due to the confinement in the care however it really isn't cruel to put your dog in a crate as the crate gives the dog security and can make the dog more calm.
As long as you take the dog out of the crate often enough to get exercise and to go potty it's not cruel at all.
