A child should be in timeout for every minute of their age.

So a child of 6 years old should be placed in timeout for 6 minutes.

Timeout can be very effective as long as you follow through and be stern with it and never laugh or grin when putting the child into timeout.

For a 6 year old child you should place the 6 year old into timeout for 6 minutes.

For a 7 year old you'd leave them in timeout for 7 minutes and you just increase the amount of time in timeout a minute per how old the child is.
