The disadvantage of a tympanoplasty are possible long term side effects such as possible facial nerve paralysis, taste disturbance, perforation and hearing loss.

After a tympanoplasty hearing loss may not improve or may get worse in some cases, the eardrum hole may reappear.

The nerve that supplies the taste to the tongue may be affected, causing temporary or permanent taste disturbance and the facial nerve can be injured and cause temporary or permanent paralysis.

Risks of tympanoplasty include pain, bleeding, infection, failure of the graft, recurrence, further surgery, worsening hearing loss or deafness, dizziness, and facial nerve injury resulting in facial palsy or to the chorda tympani nerve resulting in taste disturbances.

You can drive after a tympanoplasty within 1 to 2 weeks after the tympanoplasty or when you no longer feel dizzy, fatigued and when you're no longer taking pain medications.

Also you should avoid flying for 3 weeks to 4 weeks after a tympanoplasty.

Things you cannot do after a tympanoplasty are popping your ears and you should avoid any strenuous activity for 2 to 3 weeks after the tympanoplasty.

After a tympanoplasty you should avoid heavy lifting, contact sports, swimming and vigorous exercise for 2 to 3 weeks.

Avoid blowing your nose for 1 to 2 weeks and sneeze with your mouth open and keep your ear dry and your ear canal dry for several weeks.

You can place a cotton ball coated with some petroleum jelly in your ear when washing your hair or bathing.

You should contact your doctor if you have a fever, pus draining from the ear or incision, red streaks leading from the incision, increased pain, redness or warmth or bleeding through your bandage.

The success rate of tympanoplasty in adults is between 60 percent to 99 percent.

The success rate of tympanoplasty in children is between 35 percent to 94 percent.

An alternative to a tympanoplasty is a Myringoplasty, TM patch and the endoscopic approach.

A TM patch also called a paper patch is effective in repairing a hole in the eardrum.

A myringoplasty is a less invasive procedure than a tympanoplasty and during the myringoplasty the edges of the perforation is freshened to promote healing and a graft is placed through or lateral to the defect.

The endoscopic approach is a less invasive procedure that uses high definition cameras to access the eardrum through your external ear canal.

A tympanoplasty does improve hearing and is a surgical procedure which repairs a perforated eardrum that is also known as the tympanic membrane.

An ENT or ear, nose and throat surgeon is who performs the tympanoplasty.

The tympanoplasty can improve your hearing and prevent water from entering your middle ear and reduce the likelihood of recurrent ear infections.

A tympanoplasty is a major surgery as you'll be put under anesthesia although the tympanoplasty is a very safe procedure and most people come out of the tympanoplasty just without any complications.

A tympanoplasty is not painful at all as you will be asleep and under general anesthesia during the tympanoplasty procedure.

You may feel some slight aching of the ear for a few hours to a few days but it should not be painful.

You are not awake during a tympanoplasty because you are under general anesthesia and will be asleep and unable to feel pain the entire time during the tympanoplasty.

Most people can go home the same day after the tympanoplasty.

A tympanoplasty costs around $3,913.00 to $5,978.00 for the tympanoplasty eardrum repair surgery.

The cost of tympanoplasty also known as eardrum repair surgery varies depending on the location, type of procedure and the hospital that does the tympanoplasty surgery.

The cost of a tympanoplasty in Arizona for example is around $9,527.00 and in California the cost can be as much as $10,455.00

A tympanoplasty is covered by health insurance.

Because a tympanoplasty is medically necessary to restore your hearing after eardrum perforation or injury it is covered by most major health insurance providers.

A tympanoplasty is a surgical procedure that repairs a perforated eardrum, also known as the tympanic membrane.

The goal of the tympanoplasty surgery is to restore hearing and prevent reinfection.

Microscopic and endoscopic approaches are utilized for tympanoplasty.

A tympanoplasty is major surgery because you're usually given general anesthesia.

During a tympanoplasty the surgeon patches the eardrum using a graft (soft tissue from the patient's body, such as fascia or cartilage) or manufactured material.

Recovery after tympanoplasty takes a few days to several weeks, but it may take two months or longer for the eardrum to fully heal and for hearing to improve.

In small perforations, the operation can be easily performed under local anesthesia with a medicine that makes you drowsy (sedative).

You may get mild, intermittent ear pain during the first 2 weeks after surgery and that is OK.

I had tympanoplasty a few years ago, and one thing I noticed is that while it helped, my hearing didn’t go back to exactly how it was before. There’s also the possibility of complications, like infections or even issues with the eustachian tube. It wasn’t a bad experience overall, but the recovery takes a bit, and I had to be careful with my ear for a while. It’s worth doing if you really need it, but just know it’s not a 100% fix for everyone.
