Why are diapers called Nappies by Britain's?

Why does the United Kingdom call diapers Nappies instead of just calling them diapers like we do in the USA?

The word nappies is also another word for napkins.

The word nappy is derived from the word napkin and diapers are also known as sanitary napkins especially when the disposable diapers first came out.

The word just stuck with the United Kingdom British people so that's just why they call diapers Nappies in the UK.
