Blue Cross Blue Shield will cover the cost of cord blood banking but only if the cord blood needs to be stored because of a medical necessity of treating some condition soon after the baby is born or if treatment is expected sometime down the road.
Blue Cross Blue Shield will not cover the cost of cord blood banking if it's not medically needed so if you just want to have the cord blood stored then you'll need to pay for it out of pocket.
Initial cost to store cord blood ranges from $1,000.00 to $3,000.00 for the first time fee and then after the initial upfront cost of cord blood storage you'll have to pay $100.00 to $150.00 per year to keep the cord blood stored.
So while it does cost quite a bit initially to store the cord blood the yearly costs even out of pocket costs for cord blood storage is not that expensive.
