The disadvantage of a portable AC are they are not energy efficient and take up space in the room they are in and they don't cool a room as good as a Window AC does.

Portable AC units require the AC unit to be on the floor in the room which takes up space and you have a vent hose that needs to be vented out a window and you have to drain the water from it as it builds up.

With a window AC the AC unit is in the window itself and not on the floor and it cools better and water from the window AC unit drains out the back of the AC unit to the outside and Window AC units are more energy efficient.

It is OK to run a portable AC all day and even all night as portable AC units just like window AC units are meant to run all day and all the time.

However with a properly sized portable AC or window AC the AC compressor should shut off every so often when the temperature of the room is cooled enough to the thermostat settings.

In really hot weather though some AC units including portable AC units and window AC units may run non stop even when properly sized.

It is safe to sleep with a portable air conditioner on.

As long as your outlet is safe and the portable air conditioner is being vented to the outside it's perfectly safe to sleep with the portable air conditioner on and even leave the portable air conditioner on unattended.

I sleep with my portable air conditioner on in my room every night during the summer and even leave it on when I leave the house to keep my room cool.

I also keep my window air conditioners going in the house at night to help keep the house cool.

Even when I leave the house when it's really hot I leave the window AC on along with the portable AC in my room to keep the house and room cool so I don't come home to a hot house and room.

Portable air conditioners should be on a dedicated outlet when possible as they draw a lot of amperage.

The portable air conditioners and window air conditioners are designed to be run non stop and they have overheat protection that will shut the compressor off if it gets too hot.
