The 3 minute shower rule is a dermatologist recommended showering practice in which you apply moisturizer to your damp skin within 3 minutes of stepping out of your shower or bath.
The 3 minutes after stepping out of your shower or bath is considered a critical window of time that traps in hydration before the water on your skin evaporates, which helps to prevent dry, itchy or irritated skin.
When you use the 3 minute shower rule, the 3 minute shower rule works because after you shower or bath, your skin becomes saturated with water.
But once you get out of the shower or bath, the moisture from the water on your skin begins to evaporate into the air very quickly.
And so applying lotion or moisturizer right away or within 3 minutes of getting out of the shower or bath creates a barrier, which locks the water into your skin.
Damp skin also creates good temporary micro-channels, which also allow the active ingredients in the lotion, moisturizers and creams to penetrate into the skin more deeply and work more effectively as well.

To do the 3 minute shower rule, take your shower or bath.
Take a gentle shower and use lukewarm, but "not hot" water and some mild, fragrance free cleansers or soaps.
Hot water strips your skin of it's natural oils, so you want to use lukewarm water and not hot.
Then after your shower, pat your skin gently with a towel and avoid rubbing the skin as your skin should still remain slightly damp.
Then after you step out of the shower, moisturize your skin immediately by applying a thick, cream based moisturizer, lotion or ointment within the 3 minute window of time after you get out of the shower to seal in hydration.
