Single bank accounts may freeze when a spouse dies and then the estate could take over that bank account to pay back debts.

However a joint bank account will not be frozen upon a spouses death since the joint bank account is owned by both people named on the bank account.

The joint bank account and it's funds automatically passes over to the living spouse upon one spouses death.
