Treated pine is safe to use and now it's not as toxic as it used to be.

Newer treated pine and other treated wood is treated using copper based preservatives such as ACQ or Alkaline Copper Quaternary and is much less harmful and makes the treated pine and other treated wood safer.

However you should still take precautions when handling the treated pine, especially when burning the wood or coming into direct skin contact with it.

Treated pine is still somewhat toxic.

However treated pine is less toxic now than it was before the phase out of CCA or Chromated Copper Arsenate treatment that contained arsenic.

CCA or Chromated Copper Arsenate treatment for pine wood was phased out in 2003.

Do not burn any CCA-treated pine wood or other CCA treated wood or timber in fireplaces, barbecues, wood stoves or any wood fire.

In the event of a bush fire, the ash from burnt CCA-treated pine and CCA treated wood and other timber can contain up to 10 per cent (by weight) arsenic, chromium and copper.

Swallowing only a few grams of this ash can be harmful.

It's not recommended to use any pressure treated pine or pressure-treated wood in vegetable gardens due to the chemicals used in the treatment process, which can leach into the soil and potentially contaminate crops.

Instead you should use untreated wood or alternatives like composite materials for raised beds.
