A gas grill igniter works by creating a spark which then lights the gas in the burners.

Gas grills can contain different types of igniters which include hot surface ignition, battery powered igniters and piezo igniters.

Piezo igniters are the most popular type of igniter.

It uses a spring loaded hammer to strike a quartz crystal and the impact is what then creates an electrical spark and the electric spark ignites the propane gas in the grill.

Battery powered igniters use a battery to create an electrical spark and the process of igniting the burners with a battery powered igniter is similar to the piezo igniters.

Hot surface ignition igniters use electricity to heat a small element to a glow and the gas lights the hot element and the method is often used in luxury grills.

Some grills also have one igniter and carryover tubes which carry gas and flames to additional burners on the grill.

And some grills have a dedicated electrode for each burner.

To light a gas grill when the igniter doesn't work simply take a long match or a long neck butane lighter and hold it to the burner.

As you hold the lighter to the grills burner you turn the knob of the grill to high/light and it should light from the flame of the lighter.

You can use a lighter to light a gas grill.

You can use a long match or long neck butane lighter to light the grill when the igniter is not working.

The igniter basically just sparks the propane to ignite it.

To light the grill with a lighter or long match, turn the knob to high/light and then position the flame of the lighter or match near the burner and it should light.

If you have small matches you can use the match on a long wire to allow you to reach into the burner without burning yourself.

You can bend the wire around the match to hold it.

Then light the match and then hold it to the burner as you turn the gas on to the grill.

Turn the knob to the high/light setting and then hold the match to the burner and it should light.
