Toxic mucositis is a toxic side effect of cancer treatments such as radiation therapy or chemotherapy.
The toxic mucositis damages the mucosa which is the lining of the throat, mouth and gastrointestinal tract.
Toxic mucositis can range from deep ulcers to mild inflammation.
The symptoms of toxic mucositis include.
Constipation, stomach cramps or bloating.
Diarrhea, vomiting or nausea.
Increased mucus or thicker saliva.
White patches or push in your mouth or on your tongue.
Dryness, pain or burning when eating.
Difficulty swallowing or talking.
And painful sores in your mouth or gums.
Mucositis can also be caused by other things which include.
HIV.
Diabetes.
Kidney disease.
Gum disease.
Low body mass index.
Protein deficiency.
Dehydration.
Drinking too much alcohol.
Smoking or chewing tobacco.
And improper fitting dentures.
Benzydamine and ice chips can sometimes help prevent mucositis.
