The colors that babies see first are red which they are able to distinguish first during the first few weeks of life.

Then babies start to notice and see differences in shades of colors between red and green by 3 months to 4 months of age.

Young babies are capable of seeing colors, but their brains may not perceive them as clearly or vividly as older children and adults do.

The first primary color your baby can see is red, and this happens a few weeks into life.

A baby's vision is blurry and so it can't focus farther than 12 inches and as a result it is just the red color which can get into the circle of its vision, and thus, can easily be processed by the developing receptors and nerves in the baby's eyes.

The color red is the one that catches their sensitive retina and eye nerves.

Just after birth, a baby sees only in black and white, with shades of gray.

As the months go by, they will slowly start to develop their color vision at around 4 months.

So you're not imaging it when you see your baby fixate on your face and eyes, especially during a feeding, when your face is about a foot away.
