Can you use a piece of plywood instead of a box spring?

Does a box spring have to be used with a mattress or can you use a piece of plywood in place of the box spring?

I ask because I'm getting ready to replace my mattress and I don't really like the height of the mattress with the box spring underneath the mattress and wondering if just a piece of plywood would work okay in place of the box spring so my mattress would be lower to the ground?

The purpose of a box spring is just to support the mattress and I too hate the height of a mattress when it's on a box spring and decided to use a piece of plywood and it has worked just fine to support my mattress for 4 years now without a problem.

So yes if you want to just use a piece of plywood under your mattress it should work just fine and there's no requirement for the box spring unless the person likes there bed higher up.
