You can tell if a power strip is a surge protector by the joules rating which should be on the packaging or sometimes on the surge protector itself.

Surge protectors will also have another light which is yellow when it is providing surge protection when plugged in.

Most surge protectors work just like a power strip, many times they look like a really buff power strip.

There are outlets for you to plug your devices in, and typically an on/off switch as well.

The difference between a power strip and a surge protector is that a power strip is just a strip of outlets with a cord that allows you to plug additional things into but it does not have any surge protection.

Also make sure the outlets are fitting tight and not loose and also make sure the outlet that you plug the power strip or surge protector into is tight fitting.

The loose connection of the outlet can cause the plug and outlet to heat up which can start a fire.
