If you die without a Will in California or any other state it's known as dying Intestate and when a person dies without a will or Intestate then the estate of the person who died will take over and decide who inherits what and how to distribute any property or decide whether to sell the property to pay off any debts owed by the deceased person.
It's always a good idea to get a WILL put in place especially as you get older so it will make it easier for your property and other things to be distributed to the people you want and so everything will be taken care of once you're gone.
