The autoimmune disease that can cause blood clots is antiphospholipid syndrome which occurs when the immune system mistakenly produces antibodies that make blood much more likely to clot.

The antibodies are usually protecting the body against invaders like bacteria and viruses but sometimes it mistakenly produces the antibodies that make blood more likely to clot.

And the antiphospholipid syndrome can be caused by an underlying condition, such as an autoimmune disorder.

Antiphospholipid syndrome can cause blood clots to form within the arteries, veins, and organs.

It can also cause miscarriage and stillbirth in pregnant women.

Symptoms of antiphospholipid syndrome may include blood clots, which may occur in the legs, arms, or in the lungs.

Recurrent miscarriages may also be common.

Blood-thinning medications can reduce the risk of blood clots.

Most people with antiphospholipid syndrome can expect to live normal, active lives, especially if they get prompt treatment.

Less than 1% of people with APS go on to develop catastrophic antiphospholipid syndrome (CAPS), which causes blood clots throughout the body that damage multiple organs.

When you have antiphospholipid syndrome you may need to avoid eating large amounts of vitamin K-rich foods such as avocado, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, leafy greens and garbanzo beans.

Alcohol can increase warfarin's blood-thinning effect.

Ask your doctor if you need to limit or avoid alcohol.

Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is caused by the body's immune system producing abnormal antibodies called antiphospholipid antibodies.

This increases the risk of blood clots developing in the blood vessels, which can lead to serious health problems, such as: DVT (deep vein thrombosis)
