When you have old couches or an old couch that is not in good shape you can set it out to the curb and if your town has a program for bulky trash pickup you can schedule a bulky trash pickup for the old couch or other furniture.
If your town has no bulky trash pickup program you could see if there's a landfill close to you that allows the public to dump trash or other large bulky items with or without a fee.
Where I'm at we have a landfill that is covered with our real estate taxes and so without any additional fee we can dump any trash at the landfill including couches, mattresses and other furniture.
Our town also has a large dumpster that couches and other furniture can also be dumped into and hauled off.
You can also hire a junk removal service to haul off the old couch if you need it gone and cannot haul the old couch or other furniture off yourself.
