Horses don't lie down everyday or every night to sleep but a horse typically lies down for one to two hours every few days which is usually enough for them to get the deeper REM sleep the horses need.
A horse will become sleep deprived if they're never allowed to lay down for their REM sleep at least once every few days.
After several days of no laying down the horse could collapse and even die due to lack of proper REM sleep.
