If the owner of the house dies and it wasn't automatically willed to anyone in the family or anyone else then the house and any other possessions goes through a process called Probate.
Probate is a court supervised procedure for distributing the assets and paying the persons debts off.
The ownership of the house might then be transferred to any heirs or may be sold off to pay off any debts the deceased person owes.
