When hummingbirds won't drink from your feeder it could be that the nectar is too strong or too weak or they are hesitant to try out a new feeder.

Or the hummingbird feeder may be in a bad location or in direct sunlight where they hate to go.

Hummingbirds are picky eaters. They want fresh, flavorful nectar, so tease their taste buds with new, clean, nectar in order to win their favor.

Make sure to replace your hummingbird food often, even when it's not low.

Hummingbirds are attracted to the color red and similar shades such as pink and orange, and while all good hummingbird feeders have some amount of red in their construction, it doesn't hurt to add more.

Hummingbird feeders should be in the shade to prevent the nectar from getting too hot and spoiling too quickly.

Hummingbirds will be more attracted to a shaded feeder than they would one in hot sun.

You should position your hummingbird feeder in an area that gets afternoon shade so that it protected from the hottest temperatures.

If you put too much sugar in a hummingbirds food it will cause issues with the kidneys and liver of the hummingbird and can make them sick and they could die.

However too little sugar can cause them to not get enough calories and so they would lose interest in your hummingbird feeder.

Also never add any food coloring to the hummingbird sugar water.

The time of day that hummingbirds come to feeders is usually around 45 minutes before sunrise and they often keep feeding until dusk.

Hummingbirds use up their food intake very quickly during the day as they search for food and fly South.

To make hummingbird food mix together 1 part sugar with 4 parts water (for example, 1 cup of sugar with 4 cups of water) until the sugar is dissolvedĀ·

Do not add red dye.

During hot, dry weather, when hummingbirds risk dehydration, it's best to make your hummingbird food mixture no stronger than a quarter cup of sugar per cup of water.

Although during cold, rainy spells, make the mixture a bit stronger, up to about a third cup of sugar per cup of water This won't hurt your birds and may help them.

Hummingbirds often choose a high place for shelter from rain and wind and they don't use enclosed nests instead preferring platforms and egg like shapes in in tree branches.

The best flower for hummingbirds is the Cardinal flower, Eastern red columbine, and petunia.

Firecracker penstemon (Penstemon eatonii)
Paleface hibiscus (Hibiscus denudatus)
Parry's Penstemon (Penstemon parryi)

The kind of trees that hummingbirds build their nests in are Eastern Redbud trees, pine trees, hackberry trees, poplar trees, birch trees, hornbeam trees and oak trees.

Female hummingbirds are often build their nests on a slender and often branch that is descending and the nests of hummingbirds are often 10 feet to 40 feet off the ground.

The tree that hummingbirds love is the Eastern Redbud tree because they bloom so early and they are an important attractant for hummingbirds and other pollinators in the spring.

The red tubular flowers of California fuchsia (Epilobium canum) are also a hummingbirds favorite.

The plant loves full sun, and thrives on neglect.

Hummingbirds do recognize humans when they've been around them for awhile and hummingbirds have been found to associate a certain human face with food.

The hummingbird learns that a certain human will provide them with food.

The flying speed of a hummingbird is 61 mph.

Most hummingbirds will also return each year to where they hatched, but not necessarily to the exact same yard if they were a mile away, you'd never know it.

Roughly 10-15% will be the same individual hummingbirds every year.

Similar to some other birds, baby hummingbirds are known as chicks.

Depending on their developmental stage, they are also known as hatchlings, nestlings, and fledglings.

Hummingbird siblings may stay together until autumn, however once they've fledged, they won't return to the nest.

Newly hatched hummingbirds are naked when they come out of the egg, but within two weeks, they've grown feathers and at three weeks, they're ready to fly.
