A spider is not an insect although they are similar to insects.

Spiders, scorpions, mites, and ticks are all different kinds of arachnids.

The biggest difference between arachnids and insects are the number of legs they have.

One of the defining characteristics of spiders and other arachnids is that they have 8 legs.

Insects only have 6 legs.

Spiders are invertebrates which means the spiders do not have a backbone.

In fact, invertebrates don't have any any bones at all!

Spiders do eat flies as well as other insects.

Spiders can be very beneficial to your home as they eat many insects including flies.

I have a spider in my room right now and it's actually caught a few flies that I've seen.

The spiders meals and diets consists mainly of mosquitoes, flies, moths, and sometimes even other spiders.

So, despite the fear that these eight-legged predators can induce in humans, they're beneficial creatures to have around since they can help prevent other pesky insects from invading your home.

The spider starts to chew the liquified fly with its 'jaws' (chelicerae) and the fluid is sucked back into the mouth.

The spider repeats this process as often as necessary to digest, and ingest, all but the inedible hard parts. What is discarded afterwards is a small ball of residue.

Jumping spiders eat flies, wasps, grasshoppers, and more.

They are mostly carnivorous. Jumping spiders eat insects like flies, moths, and grasshoppers.

When people find common house spiders, they often destroy the web and kill the spider.

However, it's important to remember that spiders eat insects, including flies and mosquitoes, and they could be keeping these out of the homes they're inhabiting.

Common house spiders spin webs that are made from thin silk strands.

The majority of spider species don't have good eyesight, so they don't know if you're looking at them or not.

Spiders will raise their front legs when they feel attacked, which they will do to make themselves look bigger.

It is a defensive strategy for spiders that are attacked when they are provoked by other predators or spiders.

There are two main purposes of the raising of their front legs: To make themselves look bigger.
