When a doctor checks your butt or rectum, the doctor will have you undress from the waist down and then you will be positioned on your side or bend over an exam table.
The doctor will then put on gloves and inspect the outside of your anus for any signs of fissures, hemorrhoids or other abnormalities.
The doctor will then use a gloved and lubricated finger and insert the gloved and lubricated finger into your rectum.
The doctor will then move the gloved and lubricated finger around your rectum to feel for any bumps, lumps or other abnormalities and they may also feel your prostate gland if your man or your cervix and uterus if you're a woman.
The doctor will also often use their other hand to press on your abdomen and feel for any abnormalities and tenderness.
And the rectal exam often takes a few minutes and the doctor will then remove their finger and check the glove for any possible blood.
If the doctor detects any lumps or bumps or abnormalities they may order a colonoscopy where a camera will be inserted to look for any signs of polyps that may be cancerous.
