You cannot massage a bulging disc back into place and it's not a direct treatment which can pop or reposition the disc back into place.

However a massage can help relieve pain and help relax the muscles that surround the bulging disc.

A bulging disc is a condition that occurs when the soft, gel like center of a disc in your spine pushes out through a tear in the tough outer layer.

A bulging disc can result from various factors such as poor posture, aging and injury which can cause the disc to bulge and potentially even press on nearby nerves.

A bulging disc does not always affect the entire disc but most often, at least a quarter to a half of the discs circumference is affected.

Treatment for a bulging disc often involves a combination of nonsurgical approaches such as pain management, physical therapy and sometimes steroid injections.

Surgery is often considered in more severe cases of a bulging disc if the nonsurgical treatments are not effective.

Over the counter pain medications such as NSAIDs and acetaminophen can help reduce the pain and prescription medications that your doctor can prescribe can also help such as muscle relaxants, neuropathic drugs such as gabapentin or opioids in short term carefully monitored situations.

Things that can make a bulging disc worse include bending forward, driving, sitting, coughing, sneezing and heavy lifting.

Bulging discs can cause syringomyelia as the bulging discs creates compression on your spinal cord which then reacts by forming a syrinx.
